How are oatcakes made? Oatcakes are a popular and a healthy snack that is usually eaten along with cheese. Sometimes sweet toppings are also used. They are very popular in the United States of America. Making oatcakes at home will not take over half an hour and the ingredients are easy to get as well. Companies such as walkers and Narin are known for their large scale manufacturing of oatcakes. The following is a recipe that can make oatcakes, which can serve two members. Ingredients used: Medium oatmeal - 60g/2oz/one quarter cup Plus extra for sprinkling (as indicated in step 6) Wholemeal (whole wheat) flour - 60g//2oz/one quarter cup Bicarbonate of soda - ½ teaspoon A pinch of salt (to taste) A tablespoon of lard. 5 tablespoons of boiling water Method Of preparation: First, preheat the oven to 200°C or 400°F or Gas Mark 6. If you do not have an oven or fancy making it the traditional way; heat a griddle or heavy frying pan. Now, grease a baking tray and line the tray with a grease proof paper. Melt the tablespoon of lard over medium heat. Heat it till it melts completely. Now, place all the ingredients that have been mentioned above in a bowl and add a tablespoon of melted lard and the five teaspoons of boiling water into it. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly till it forms dough. Now sprinkle the surface of a board with oatmeal and place the dough on it. Divide the dough into two equal halves and place one piece aside. Shape the half into a ball and roll it using a pin till it’s about half a centimetre thick. Now cut as many as oatcakes possible. Place this on a baking tray and place the remains aside. Repeat this with the other half of the dough as well. Now mould together all the left over dough and roll it to form more oatcakes. Place all these into the oven for about ten minutes till the edges turn golden brown. Remove it once it’s cooked and place it aside till cools. |
